Australians who want their families to enjoy the blessings of living in a free society should understand that the lives we've led since 1945 in the Western world is very rare in human history. Our children are unlikely to enjoy anything so placid, and may well spend their adult years in a savage and violent world unless we decide that who and what we are is worth defending.
However, crisis is routinely identified as a core mechanism of fascism and tyranny because it short-circuits debate and democratic deliberation. Hence all fascistic movements commit considerable energy to prolonging a heightened state of emergency. Sometimes, when the somebody asks you what are you most scared will happen? you should think and reply, "the day I can't say, that's a stupid question!
