In this day and age the sense of safety and security is harder to create than the reality of it but I believe using comprehensive partnerships with Police, the Larrakia Nation, the community, industry groups and public education programs we can empower our community to deal with anything that comes our way.
Territorian’s are resilient people, Cyclones, War, Economic down-turns and, major projects have created challenges and although we’ve stumbled, we’ve always got straight back up and risen to the occasion.
The Territory has the most unforgiving landscape in Australia. Our Flora and Fauna can be deadly, but we find a way.
The Darwin City Council has made a great start to many programs and the creation of the Public places service collaboration group is the right way to go.
But the following items I believe can expand Darwin’s and the ward of Richardson’s Capabilities to meet the public’s needs now and into the future.
The Creation of a safe cover network
One of the most dangerous risks to human life is the environment. During the Wet season our community is at risk of lightning strikes and pneumonia due to our heavy wet-season. The creation of a plan to ensure a majority of walk-ways in the CBD and those associated with commercial properties in the suburbs are covered will reduce this risk substantially. A public/private partnership should include the implementation of Solar safety lighting and where required the installation of council controlled surveillance camera’s
Safe Camera Network
The creation of a network of CCTV camera’s around the Darwin CBD and in the suburbs at high risk locations and a public Map provided online for tourists and the public to make an informed decision of safe and secure travel.
Provision of a Neighbourhood watch meeting place
Neighbourhood watch aims to minimize the incidence of preventable crime, in partnership with council a public location could be provided for all 4 Wards once a month for community consultation and referral of public concerns to relevant authorities.
Sober Bob Program partnership
An expansion of the Sober BOB program to include online referrals to local private hire cars, taxi’s and mini-buses. A Council and Government partnership in providing safety tips and public transport information.
Personal and Business Safety Plan’s Certification
A monthly certified program in partnership with a qualified provider to provide Businesses and members of the public with education on Community, recreational and business safety procedures.
Theft prevention education
meetings to be held in partnership with Neighbourhood watch once a month. With public consultation referred to relevant departments and communication discussed in an open forum.
Safety Audit Programs
In Partnership with NT Police, emergency services, neighbourhood watch and other key stakeholders conduct safety audits through-out the city.
Reduced cost First aid certificate courses for rates payers
Private and council partnership to provide at cost First-Aid training to Neighbourhood watch members and person’s identified as Council first responder’s in emergency situations.
A comprehensive Disaster plan
The provision of training location and emergency response training for council employee’s and associated members and representatives.
