“A recommendation has been made to the City of Darwin to allow the use of fake grass on council land”
Hmmm Matey, Keep off the Grass!
Grass is a living organism. Each plant takes in Carbon-dioxide converts it into energy in the photosynthesis process and releases it into the atmosphere as Oxygen.
In a city with robust construction and future developments on the horizon it is also important to remember that natural grass is a dust and dirt trapper. The dust lands on the hairy leaves and is trapped and when dew is form due to atmospheric conditions in the morning the dust and dirt is transported to the base to become part of the natural mulch system.
Natural Grass and turf grass are pollution filters. Landscaped areas reduce pollutants from leaching into the soil and the natural water supply. Natural grass also slows the process and in some cases stops the process of pollutants and sediment entering the waste water supply in the form of run-off.
Healthy Natural turf grasses also filters storm water excess and can redirects and slows the water flow allowing more water to be absorbed into the soil, which aids in soil erosion and reducing flooding. Flooding is a major risk to human life during 4 months of the year, our wet season.
Natural grass creates natural thermal dynamics, it is substantially cooler than soil and during the scorching heat of the dry season it will be several degrees cooler than asphalt or concrete. The natural cooling effect is basically environmental air-conditioning.
Green spaces have been shown to improve a sense of wellness and decrease stress. Plants have been shown to lower blood pressure, reduce tension, increase attention and reduce fear. The use of and the care of Natural grass has been shown to have both therapeutic effects and health benefits for young and old.
Natural grass increases the community appeal and improves value. Coming from a background in Real estate I can easily profess that first impressions count and a living, vibrant lawn can substantially increase the value of a home and the community.
Economically grass provides work for low skilled workers and in a democratic, capitalist society that means greater employment and greater contribution.
So why Fake Grass?
Is it because for 4-6 months of the year due to our environment many grasses go brown?
Rather than look at the Dangerous alternative of Plastic or fake grasses that have both a negative environmental impact on humans as well as the wild-life, flora, soil and increases the economic risks and costs of flooding and pollution, there are other alternatives.
Research into Grass sprays and the amount of products on the market over the last few years is extensive. Products like Colour guard and several other products or non toxic, bio-degradable and cheaper than re-seeding or fertilizer.
The products have advanced so much and been simplified so that now the pre-made products can be attached to a hose and sprayed directly on the lawns. (A steady hand is still preferred however).
I have been lucky enough to have seen this product used in places like Las Vegas and California by councils and home-owners alike to keep their cities and homes looking vibrant through-out the year.
So personally I see no reason to use fake grass…. But maybe you do? I would love to know what for?
